“Today, it has become clear to everyone that the stances of the Islamic Republic of Iran are based on rationality, prudence, truthfulness, resistance, and perseverance,” Raisi told reporters on Wednesday, before departing Tehran for Damascus for a two-day state visit to Syria.
He called Iran-Syria ties “completely strategic”, stating that the aim of his trip is to reinforce and expand economic, political and security ties with the Arab country.
“The two countries are bent on the developing relations, and there are many fields for expanding cooperation,” he remarked. “In our talks, we are also pursuing the acceleration of the implementation of the agreements between the two countries, and I am sure that the expansion of relations between Tehran and Damascus will benefit the two nations as well as the region."
President Raisi pointed out that the relations between Iran and Syria are not ordinary, adding that the enemies have attempted repeatedly to disintegrate Syria and spoil its relations with regional countries.
“American-made groups such as Daesh and other Takfiri groups have created chaos and committed many crimes in Syria and the region through murder, bloodshed, and riots, but the resistance groups and the resistant people of Syria and Mr. Bashar al-Assad himself, as well as the Syrian government, have shown that they are determined to continue resistance against the attacks,” he added.
Later in the day, President Raisi arrived in Damascus for a historic visit, which marks the first trip by an Iranian president to Syria since a foreign-backed militancy erupted in the Arab country in 2011.
Four government ministers, Iran’s top banker, Raisi’s chief of staff, and his chief political advisor accompany him on the visit to Syria.
